Campaigners have warned that thousands of pensioners will struggle to get by this winter
WASPI campaigners are raising the alarm that thousands of older individuals will go through hardship this winter as they say the state pension fails to keep up with their actual costs. Campaign chair Angela Madden expressed fears of 'trouble' ahead, saying: "Things are more expensive now because they went up all year, not just one or two months at the end.
The campaign group held a demonstration outside Parliament last week as Rachel Reeves presented her Budget. That event confirmed a 4.1 percent rise in state pension from next April in line with the so-called triple lock policy, which ensures state pensions will rise each year by inflation, average earnings or 2.5 per cent - whichever is highest.
"There certainly are some in Parliament. Their judgment is perhaps coloured by their work colleagues being rich pensioners, but in society there are so many struggling to get by."
