Women born in the 1950s affected by State Pension age changes may not get a DWP compensation update until the new year.
Millions of women born in the 1950s have been waiting since March 21 for successive UK Governments to respond to the findings and recommendations made by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman in its final report. The Ombudsman found that the Department for Work and Pensions had been guilty of ‘maladministration’ by failing to let women know that their State Pension age was due to increase from 60 to 65, then 66.
Based on current Office for National Statistics figures, an estimated 3.5 million women have been affected by increases to the official age of retirement. “I appreciate the state that the public finances have been left in, and I acknowledge the complexity of this issue, but many of my constituents are concerned that justice is being further delayed.
The topic of a response was also raised in written questions to the DWP which were both answered on Thursday. Ms Reynolds continued: “The Ombudsman’s report took around five years to complete and deserves serious consideration. This Government respects the work of the Ombudsman and we are currently working through all aspects of the Ombudsman’s final report along with the evidence provided during the investigation.”
WASPI campaigners will be demonstrating between 12 and 3pm and calling for compensation for all women born in the 1950s impacted by changes to their State Pension age. The ‘WASPI can’t wait - compensate’ demo is the latest move by campaigners to keep the focus on a compensation plan, which was recommended by the PHSO.
