Castlevania: Nocturne's time and place
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Premiering on September 28, 2023, Netflix's Castlevania: Nocturne continues the franchise, setting the story in a different location and year than the previous Castlevania animated series. The new series is the second show in an expansive franchise consisting of one anime, over 30 different video games, 47 music albums, and numerous mangas.
Unlike the original Castlevania show, Castlevania: Nocturne follows Richter Belmont, a descendant of the famous vampire-hunting family. While they're redesigned, many other characters from the video game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood also appear in the preview including Maria Renard, Annette, and Erzsebet Báthory. However, the setting of the new Netflix show is clearly different from the video game, not centering around Dracula's castle.
Castlevania: Nocturne Takes Place in 1792 During Geeked Week 2022, Netflix announced that Castlevania: Nocturne would take place in 1972 during the French Revolution. The first glimpse of this appears in the cartoon’s previews. Richter Belmont fights against the secret ring of vampires controlling French society during the overhaul of the monarchy.
The visuals shown in the Castlevania: Nocturne also help create an immersive representation of revolutionary France. The buildings shown in the previews also use the neoclassical style of architecture common during the time period. The characters wear fashion from revolutionary France including ruffled jabot collars, double-breasted coats, and panniered court dresses.
