Campaigners are hoping to get payouts of £10,000 or more
Britons are rallying behind WASPI movement as a petition demanding compensation for the women gathers pace with more than 85,000 signatures. The WASPI campaign has been relentlessly urging the Government to compensate women born in the 1950s who were impacted when the state pension age was raised from 60 to 65.
With more than 85,500 supporters, the parliamentary petition implores the Government to "fairly compensate WASPI women". The Government will have to issue a response as it has surpassed 10,000 signatures and if it reaches 100,000, the matter will be considered for parliamentary debate. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced in recent days that the DWP is poised to make an announcement regarding the WASPI controversy. Several of his MPs have shown support for the campaign, with Labour's Work and Pensions Committee, now chaired by MP Debbie Abrahams, endorsing the push for compensation.
The Liberal Democrats and SNP have both adopted official party stances advocating for compensation to be awarded to the women. WASPI campaign chair Angela Madden previously commented: "It's in the Ombudsman's report: we didn't get sufficient information, we weren't informed correctly of the impact of pensions changes on us.
