“YouTube are a complete disgrace”, Labour chair of the home affairs committee Yvette Cooper told BuzzFeed News.
Anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson is asking for donations and support for his European election campaign on a new YouTube channel that bypasses sweeping restrictions the platform placed on his main video channel last month.
“On a day when governments across the world are pledging action against far-right extremism online, YouTube are exposed once again for promoting online hatred and racist abuse. Videos show up in search and can be recommended to users, while the channel can also live-stream – one of the most effective ways Robinson was able to gain more than 300,000 subscribers on the main channel. The new one is much smaller with just over 5,000 so far.
Last week, YouTube de-monetised UKIP candidate and Gamergate leader Carl Benjamin’s Sargon of Akkad account after he made comments about raping Labour MP Jess Phillips.in the name of Benjamin and Robinson — both men have been previously banned from Twitter — which had many thousands of followers. In the letter seen by BuzzFeed News, Cooper asked for further information about a dozen issues, including the Christchurch mosque attack and the removal of “hateful and abusive” content from the platform.
“Why YouTube users who have never watched similar videos have right-wing and far-right content recommended to them.”

YouTube Rushes To Shut Down School Shooter’s Account Over Copyright ComplaintsSAN BRUNO, CA—Following the Colorado school shooting that left one dead and eight others wounded, YouTube announced Thursday it had moved quickly to shut down the accounts of one of the suspects after receiving complaints over copyright violations. “Shortly after the heartbreaking events in Highlands Ranch, we took the action of removing all the suspect’s videos in response to infringement claims made by copyright holders,” said CEO Susan Wojcicki, who explained that when the names of the accused shooters were released, YouTube had taken the immediate precaution of freezing the suspect’s account to ensure he wasn’t disseminating any messages without distributing the proper royalties. “When we saw he shared a clip owned by NBCUniversal, we scrubbed this and all other copies from the platform within minutes. Spreading this kind of content on YouTube is simply unacceptable without first receiving the proper clearances. We don’t want him inspiring others to violate intellectual property laws in similar ways.” Wojcicki added that the company would consider reinstating his account if he agreed not to share any unlicensed music.
