I needed them. About halfway through, I could feel myself losing my tasting edge. We were judging on clarity, smell, taste and color — and there was considerable variety in the flavor and aroma departments. A couple of entries had a distinct whiff of chemicals. Most were neutral, and a couple reminded me strongly of summers swimming in Vermont’s Lake Champlain: all smooth stone and a pleasant whisper of earth.
As I tasted, I marveled at how some samples left my tongue feeling chalky, or even furry, while others slipped down smooth as silk. The latter felt the most thirst-quenching, while the edgier samples had stronger personalities, either for good or for not-so-good. While we waited for the results to be tabulated, I conferred with AWWA president Jacangelo and found we agreed that the entries were evenly matched in color and clarity, but that there were one or two real standouts for flavor.
