AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety will unveil a new memorial to its fallen officers during a public ceremony on Thursday.got an exclusive first look at the $2.4 million project, located outside Texas DPS headquarters in Central Austin.
On Tuesday morning, crews put the finishing touches on the project, which honors the 242 members of Texas DPS killed in the line of duty since 1835. All but two were commissioned peace officers.“We never had the location that was worthy of the sacrifice of these families,” Col. Steve McCraw, director of Texas DPS, said during an interview at the monument on Tuesday.“It’s humbling,” McCraw said.
The memorial includes granite from the same quarry used to build the Texas State Capitol. Monoliths highlight the department's diversity, technology and values.One monolith also includes a silhouette.
