The UK competition watchdog is looking into findings by Which? that loyalty cards may not be giving customers genuine discounts.
It looked into the price history of 141 items with Tesco Clubcard and Nectar card ‘discounts’ over the last six months.One example highlighted by Which? was a 200g jar of Nescafé Gold Blend instant coffee sold at Sainsbury’s for £8.10 to general customers or £6 for customers with a Nectar card.
Meanwhile, a 605g bottle of Heinz Salad Cream was being sold at Tesco with a ‘regular’ price of £3.90 and a Clubcard price of £3.50.The regular price had been £2.99 for weeks before it rose to £3.90 just 22 days before the promotion.Both supermarkets said Which? failed to account for inflation in its price analysis and insisted they are following Trading Standards rules on promotions.
