Pressure mounts on British Museum to reveal list of stolen artefacts as experts doubt the museum know how many gone
Even if the museum did not have a full inventory of the stolen items, they could start a public list and keep updating if the list grows.
Mr Brand also said he would expect the British Museum to have hundreds of thousands of objects in storage boxes that would never see the light of day in a display.“It might be that many of these items – they might know he has sold them, but it might be very difficult to prove they belonged to the British Museum because of the lack of an inventory list,” he said.
The head of the Association of Greek Archaeologists, Despina Koutsoumba, said her colleagues are “worried” about how many Greek items are missing following the revelations up to 2000 items were stolen. Christopher Marinello, a lawyer and expert in recovering stolen art, told the PA news agency that the theft exposes the museum to questions over the safety of the ancient sculptures.
“Concerns were only raised about a small number of items, and our investigation concluded that those items were all accounted for.”
