Museum bosses reportedly told the art dealer 'there was no suggestion of any wrongdoing' and the 'collection was protected'.
‘Close to 2,000 pieces worth millions’ have vanished ‘over a significant period of time’, reports say, bringing the museum’s reputation under threat.
A response from deputy director Jonathan Williams in July 2021 reportedly said ‘there was no suggestion of any wrongdoing’, the ‘collection was protected’ and there had been a ‘thorough investigation’. He claims he followed up multiple times, with one email accusing Mr Williams and director Hartwig Fischer of ‘sweeping it all under the carpet’.
Metro.co.uk has contacted the British Museum for comment but it has so far declined to do so while a police investigation is ongoing.
