Earning the title of first breakaway roping champion in San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo history was music to Martha Angelone’s ears.The Stephenville cowgirl’s 2.1-second run Saturday night earned her the gold buckle in the first year of the event at the AT&T Center.
“It’s exciting to be a part of history,” said Angelone, 26, who pocketed $15,000 for the win and $20,250 total over the 18-day competition.Angelone’s buckle was one of eight awarded on the closing night of the 18-day competition. The champion in each of the eight events was based on total money earned throughout the rodeo.Contestants competed in one of five preliminary rounds and one of two semifinals. Others earned a trip to the finals in the wild-card round.
Kaycee Feild, the reigning world champion, scored a 91.5 aboard a Calgary Stampede horse named Agent Lynx to take the bareback riding title and take home $21,000 in winnings. It was the third time Feild has won the San Antonio rodeo, setting an arena record in 2011 with a 93-point ride.
