Mental health blogger who received parcels from Twitter followers had to have them opened by Priory staff due to self-harm risks, inquest hears
A blogger who died after ingesting a substance that arrived in the post while a patient at a secure mental health unit in Stockport, had parcels she received from Twitter followers opened because she was becoming a growing suicide risk, an inquest into her death has heard.
The 26-year-old had been detained under the Mental Health Act and transferred to a unit at the secure hospital, more than 250 miles from her home in Cornwall, for specialist therapy. Beth, a support worker from the village of Menheniot near Liskeard, took the 'poisonous' substance after she opened a package she had bought on the internet.
Mr Bridgman also questioned why staff opened her parcels when it is such a restrictive practice and had never been done by The Priory before. Then in November 2021 she was transferred to The Priory in Cheadle for specialist Dialectical Behaviour Therapy , which is where she was a patient at the time of her death in March of the following year.
Jurors were told that as her relationship with her boyfriend Matt Parkinson deteriorated, she became more troubled and her risk of self-harm increased and staff at the facility had to remove possible ligature items from her room.
