Education Minister Robert Halfon told Sky News:"It's very sad that these strikes are taking place. It damages children's schooling, they've already suffered during COVID.
"We know that in previous strikes, over 90% of schools remained open. I thank all the teachers and support staff for doing everything possible to keep looking after and teaching our children." He said the government and trade unions needed"to do everything we can to resolve this strike", adding they have to be fair to teachers but also fair to taxpayers amid the cost of living crisis.
The Department for Education insisted a"fair and reasonable" pay offer had been made to the unions and said the government was"considering" the independent pay review's report. A spokesperson added:"This strike action will see the cancellation of end of term events and important transition days to secondary schools, impacting children and causing more disruption for parents."
