will trade him at the deadline and which team will sign him as a free agent next offseason. But the most intriguing question, strictly from a baseball perspective, is this: What if Ohtani puts together a season in which he hits like he did in 2021 and pitches like he did in ‘22?
In ‘21, he ranked third in the majors with 46 homers and fifth with a .965 OPS. In ‘22, he ranked second in the majors with a 33.2 percent strikeout rate and sixth with a 2.33 ERA. Performing at both those levels in one season might seem unrealistic. But everything Ohtani attempts is unrealistic, until he does it. At 28, he is in his prime.
Which, of course, is what will make Ohtani such an intriguing free agent. No one knows how long he will continue his two-way mastery. Teams might consider offering him separate contracts for hitting and pitching, but considering the additional revenue Ohtani generates, no club should get too cute. Some big-market monster — the
