Beginning in the realm of comedy, the play goes to very dark places as the ensemble wrestles over how to tell the truth about this terribly violent period, which is often overshadowed by the many other genocides that fill our history books. Theatre Y encourages audience members to stay for talkbacks with the cast after each performance, where they can process emotions and share feedback about this challenging show.
But a conflict quickly arises over the question of source materials. The only primary sources the ensemble has to work with are letters written by German soldiers stationed in Namibia — or Südwestafrika, as the colonists called it. Several of the Black actors point out that these letters present a whitewashed version of history and exclude the voices of the Indigenous people.
