Houston Grand Opera opened its 2022-23 season with Verdi’s 'La traviata.' In May 2023, HGO and Miller Outdoor Theatre will present two performances of the show for free. This year marks 170 years for Verdi’s “La traviata.” At this point, the opera seems destined to stick around. Jest aside, the tragedy about a Parisian courtesan seeking love remains an internationally beloved work after all of these years.
Soprano Meryl Dominguez will play the doomed Violetta, with Ricardo Garcia in the role of Alfredo and Anthony Evans as Germont. This production of “La traviata” opened Houston Grand Opera’s 2022-23 season last year to sold-out crowds. Alex Amsel, HGO’s resident conductor will conduct; Arin Arbus will direct. “La traviata” is sung in Italian with projected English translation.Several of the performers — including Dominguez and Garcia — are members of the Houston Grand Opera Studio.
The performances will be 8 p.m. on May 19 and 20 at Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Drive. The shows are free, but tickets are required for covered seating. They become available at 10 a.m. the day prior to a performance at Miller’s website here or at the box office. HGO subscribers will receive reserved seating as part of their subscription.
