Leaving and staying both have their hardships. One is building an entirely new life in an unknown place. An Afghan man who came to San Diego after working with the U.S. military described it to me as learning to live “on Mars.” The other is living a life that a more recently arrived Afghan man described to me as a constant state of hypervigilance and fear, of not being able to think about the future because you know that there is a high chance that you might not make it home today.
One asylum-seeking mother recently told me that she’d already lived, but her children hadn’t. Another told me that she wanted her children to be able to be somebody without the shadow of the violence in her country hanging over them. They both have chosen to stay because they believe the possibility of helping to bring about change is worth that potential sacrifice.. Before the Taliban took over, they taught women skills including reading, writing, math, tailoring, farming and baking and supported those women in launching small businesses.
