The Texans shut out Summer Creek for 73 of the 80 minutes, but the final seven minutes of the first half prove to be the difference.
After handing Sam Rayburn its first state playoff appearance in six years, there were lots of tears Friday night when the campaign came to a stop with a 2-1 bi-district loss to Summer Creek.HOUSTON - Seven minutes. That's all that separated Sam Rayburn High School's varsity boys soccer team from potentially joining the 64 best teams in the state.
It was as bitter a pill as a team could swallow. Subtract those seven minutes and Rayburn fans may have been making plans for the Area round. But now we'll never know. Head coach Carlos Manrique and his staff tried to console as many of their dejected players as possible after the match, but it was obvious the guys knew the program had turned a sorely-needed corner and they were responsible for it.
The difference in this contest was the goal scored by Jaden Mercado with 7:13 remaining in the first half and then Tomas Echerri's header with only 42 seconds left. It looked like Sam Rayburn caught Summer Creek napping to start the match. A mere 26 seconds into the contest and the Texans were on top 1-0. It was basically two passes to the left of the net and then a kick that found the right corner of Summer Creek's goal.
