Opinion: In Downtown San Diego, homelessness is at all-time high and progress is painfully slow [Opinion]
This is not an indictment of all that Gloria and so many other elected and civic leaders have done to respond to homelessness. Among, shelter capacity has gone up 25 percent since April 2021 under Gloria. A new 150-bed tent shelter is expected to open in the Midway area on Monday. But it needs to be said that the city’s overall record demands humility, not hubris.
Beyond the interlocking problems of extreme housing costs, mental illness and addiction, city officials face the fact their idealized views of what best helps homeless peoplethat the San Diego Central Library will hire a social worker to help deal with homeless patrons offers hope that staff will respond to disruptive incidents and drug use and create a better, more inviting atmosphere for all. That won’t “end” homelessness. But it amounts to progress on an issue where all progress is welcome.
