OAKLAND — A fire broke out at a homeless encampment Tuesday morning underneath Interstate 880, according to authorities.
The fire was reported at about 4:22 a.m. at an encampment located at 26th Street and Wood Street, said Oakland Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt. About 25 firefighters responded to the incident and additional engines were called in because there weren’t fire hydrants on scene and they had to bring their own water. A school bus, RV and a camper were at the fire.
“As always, the biggest challenge of these incidents off of Wood street is access, an array of hazardous materials including large amount propane tanks and the lack of water to use to put out the fire,” Hunt said. “The area where these vehicles are parked and temporary structures are assembled is below the freeway, far from any hydrants, and often are behind locked gates.”
One person suffered from smoke inhalation and crews called an ambulance, but they denied transport, according to Hunt. The fire was put under control at about 6:30 a.m., according to authorities. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
