A person died Wednesday after the van he was driving caught fire in an East Oakland home’s yard after fleeing police, authorities said.
in the middle of the intersection of 63rd and Avenal avenues by Oakland police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, followed by a police statement Wednesday night, officers responded to the 8400 block of Ney Street shortly after 10:45 a.m. and saw the van. After running its plates, officers realized it had been reported stolen recently out of Oakland.
Although no officers followed the van, the department’s helicopter saw sparks flying from its tires as it tracked it from overhead for a little over two miles to the 6400 block of Avenal where it came to rest near a home’s yard. Officers managed to arrive and tried to put out the fire and rescue the man, calling for Oakland Fire Department firefighters’ help. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said two officers were taken to a hospital for treatment of burns and injuries during the attempted rescue.
