Intensive care nurses in Turkey’s Hatay province were forced to flee hospitals with all the newborn babies they could carry in their arms during Monday’s devastating earthquake

The devastating earthquake has been called the country’s worst disaster and the death toll continues to climb, with hope for search and rescue operations slowly fading.

“We can no longer focus on the social media messages claiming that there is a sound in the wreckage. Because we are unable to keep up. The light debris is now gone. The heavy work started,” the rescuer said. “We cannot move from one wreck to another. Volunteers, the AFAD team, expert teams, and humanitarian aid are all over the place, but the equipment is seriously insufficient. Regrettably, this causes a delay.”

“There are trucks and aid packages everywhere. But all of this assistance is left outside in the rain and humidity, where it rots,” the volunteer said.
