A developer has unveiled plans to build 40 new homes in what has been described as "one of the best preserved mill towns in the country".
Gleeson Developments has submitted an application to Rossendale Borough Council to build 40 properties directly next to St Mary's RC Primary School in Bacup. The land, previously used for agricultural purposes, is situated between the school and Slack Gate Farm off Tong Lane. The development will include 10 different property styles made up of four two-bedroom homes, 28 with three bedrooms and eight with four bedrooms. The houses will be a mix of terraced, semi-detached and detached properties.A design and access statement reveals: "Each dwelling will be provided with a minimum of 2no. off road parking spaces, including the garage space where detailed, but often this provides an additional space in addition to the minimum.
The application describes Bacup as "one of the best preserved mill towns in the country" and adds: "The town centre of Bacup is due to undergo some regeneration to both the public realm and surrounding buildings following the receipt of funding from Historic England from the national High Street Heritage Action Zone programme.
"The town centre of Bacup is also host to a traditional bi-weekly market which opens on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The town centre is host to a number of heritage features, and is considered to be one of the best preserved mill towns in the country."
