Is a suspension next for Max Scherzer after being ejected? A March memo sent to all clubs says 'pitchers who are caught possessing or applying any foreign substance would be subject to immediate ejection & automatic suspension.' Details on that memo:

It’s not a coincidence that these latest efforts to deal with sticky stuff come at a time when the league is introducing. Don’t overlook the fact that one of the biggest goals of those rules is to get more balls in play, by banning the shift and by imposing a pitch clock that appeared to play a role in lowering strikeout rates in the minor leagues.

MLB’s data provides clear evidence that the June 2021 crackdown was highly effective in reducing spin rates. The result was an immediate drop in the strikeout rate and an increase in balls in play. But that impact was only temporary, prompting MLB to step up those efforts for the 2023 season. So will they work? It’s worth recalling that just last spring, the league announced it would begin inspecting pitchers’ hands for the same reason. But instead of dropping, spin rates rose, and there wasn’t a single ejection of a pitcher for sticky stuff all season. Will a return to cap and glove checks, plus the threat of mid-inning inspections, get pitchers’ attention? Hitters we spoke with this spring were skeptical. But stay tuned.
