Menopause care crisis revealed as women face waiting until 2025 for NHS appointments 🔴luciemheath + ChaplainChloe report:
Women face waiting times of more than a year to be referred for specialist menopause treatment on the NHS,At least 6,700 women in England are on waiting lists for menopause treatment, waiting an average 232 days – or more than seven months – for referral to a specialist clinic, according to Freedom of Information data obtained byThat is almost double the NHS treatment target of 18 weeks after a patient is referred by their GP.
Dr Zoe Hodson, a GP with a special interest in menopause, said she only remembers receiving two hours of lessons on menopause during the 10 years of training she received as a GP. “Or if every NHS trust invested in training at least one prescriber to understand the menopause and identify symptoms – most of those people who are waiting to be referred could have been seen with someone with adequate knowledge. It is so easily resolved, you would see a dramatic change.”
She currently takes HRT to alleviate her symptoms, including mood swings, joint pain, and hot flushes. She has not been given a date yet for her first appointment but has “heard on the grapevine that it could be a year to 18 months”.
