The midfielder was thrown on against Brentford on Saturday and delivered with two goals but Erik ten Hag is still struggling to get the best out of his attacking players.
As 70,000 Manchester United fans left Old Trafford on Saturday, the adrenaline of an added-time comeback win still pulsing through the veins, it would have been easy to view that 2-1 win over Brentford as the jump lead to kickstart their stalling season.
For 90 minutes, United were abysmal, conceding a sloppy goal midway through the first-half and failing to create any real danger up until the point at which they threw the Hail Mary of McTominay into the Brentford box. His goals and the subsequent result were exciting, but they are just a sticking plaster for issues that have plagued Ten Hag's tenure at Old Trafford.
Goals, or a lack of them, have been a constant talking point at United ever since Ten Hag's arrival. At first, it was specifically related to Cristiano Ronaldo and his poor performance in front of goal during the first half of last season, before he was axed. As promising as the 20-year-old has been in his first few games, he is not yet a world-class finisher and there has been little help from those around him. His three goals have all come in the Champions League and mostly been made by himself.
