But the exhibition doesn’t seek to decode the enigmas of Vermeer’s paintings conclusively, because who could? And more importantly, who would want to? In a review for thethat part of Vermeer’s magic, and what might explain him provoking such a rapturous reception from today’s audience, is his extraordinary ability to provide moments of slowness and stillness in our image-saturated world.
There are plenty of reasons to beg, borrow, or steal your way to a ticket to the exhibition. The previous show to feature anywhere near this number of Vermeer paintings was in Washington in 1995, where they assembled 20; here, there are 28. The likelihood of any institution ever having the resources – and the fortuitous timing, with the Frick’s renovation meaning all three of their paintings were available for loan – to stage an exhibition like this again is slim.
