The BBC monopoly of radio ended almost half a century ago. Because news is expensive to provide and will always attract smaller audiences than music – the nation’s overall favourite radio station is still BBC Radio 2 – the challenge to commercial competitors is, and always has been, formidable.
LBC, commercial radio’s flagship news provider, went through several ownerships before becoming part of the Global group of profitable music stations. LBC’s breakfast host Nick Ferrari runs a fast, right-leaning news and opinion show. Yet there’s a significant result for the one that follows his at 9am. James O’Brien leans left politically. His ratings have gone up impressively. He now has 1.5 million listeners weekly.reaches its third birthday in June.
The “up at 6 am, out by 8.30 am” national work pattern has changed, probably by the two Covid years, but also possibly due to a deeper trend, such as self employment. Certainly, it is due to more people being available to listen up until 1pm. Chorley’s radio show has now become a road show as well. But it was radio that gave him a national following.
Radio as a whole remains a strong force in British national life. So why is the BBC cutting back on journalists in its local radio stations, the ones every parent turns to if there’s a teachers or a transport strike?
