Waheed Akhtar had applied to become a private hire driver but his application was rejected by councillors after an objection from Police Scotland.
A would-be private hire driver who assaulted his wife and young daughters has been slammed by councillors after claims his behaviour is “normal in Asian culture”.
Cllr Alex Wilson, SNP, who chairs the licensing committee, said: “You said that in Asian culture, it is okay to lift your hand to a child or a female. Is that correct?” Cllr Wilson responded: “Discipline? With a shoe? We have heard from Police Scotland in its submission that the applicant assaulted his daughter, aged three, when he struck her with a shoe? That’s not discipline.”
Mr Akhtar said: “I would never blame religion. It was my lawyer. He told me to put in it was a cultural thing.”
