Ferrari's first soft-top since 1969: meet the new Roma Spider...
► First new soft-top in more than 50 yearsFerrari has announced the new Roma Spider – a convertible version of its. And, interestingly, the Spider model is Ferrari’s first new soft top since the 365 GTS4 of 1969.
As with the Roma coupe, there’s a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 under the long, sculptured bonnet that revs to 7500rpm and produces 612bhp and 561lb ft. That power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch auto derived from the, and Ferrari says the Roma Spider is capable of a 3.4sec 0-62mph sprint and a top speed of more than 199mph.
Naturally, though, Maranello has had to make a couple of changes in the design and structure of the Spider compared to the coupe. Modifications to the rear deck of the Roma include a compartment for the roof to fold away in and a revised active spoiler – now finished in carbonfibre to separate it from the body colour – that blends visually with the headrests and rear deck.
Ferrari says it uses a specially-developed material for the Roma Spider’s roof, and is customisable via differently-coloured weaves or a two-tone colour scheme. A new wind deflector, patented by Ferrari, helps to eliminate as much bluster from the cabin as possible – so much so that Ferrari claims wind turbulence is around 30 per cent lower than its last ‘2+’ convertible model. The roof can be folded or opened in 13.5 seconds at speeds of up to 37mph.
As for its construction, Maranello says elements of the Portofino M have been incorporated into the Roma Spider’s rear section. Additional strengthening has added 84kg to the total weight.
