With roaring inflation — still 8.5% — that is costing the state money. And gas prices in recent weeks have come back down.
The holiday is short at 10 August days, well-timed for families struggling with high inflation rates and has some appropriate rules.Qualified clothing and footwear can’t cost more than $125 per item, so designer stuff mostly won’t count. The break doesn’t include ski gear or cosmetics or electronics, but it does include pants, scarves and coats as well as dresses, gloves and earmuffs.
The holiday likely will be good for businesses by stimulating demand, which is not something you want to do with gas. It might have at least a minor impact on localized inflation by incentivizing retailers to keep their prices under the threshold and should also help them sell their excess inventory of clothing essentials for warmth and comfort.
And, most important of all, it will give struggling families a much-needed break while steering them toward things their kids need the most, as distinct from want the most.
