Anyone who claims the benefit and has a child aged from 3-12 will be expected to work or search for it for 30 hours a week

A major change has come in from today for thousands of parents who are claiming Universal Credit. The Department for Work and pensions has brought in the new practice - and it impacts on anyone with a child between the ages of 3 and 12.

Parents of children of that age will have to agree with their Work Coach to spend more time in work or applying for jobs, up to a maximum of 30 hours a week. DWP said claimant commitments will be tailored to parents’ personal circumstances, including the availability of childcare. Alongside local Jobcentre support, this action could include time updating CVs or developing skills through courses and workshops.

Other age groups who have children are staying the same in Universal Credit. Currently this means that those with children on Universal Credit under the age of 1 will not be expected to look for work.
