Hotel manager Glen Widdowson suffered from sleep apnea
A driver has been jailed for three-and-a-half years after he hit jogger Aimi McCaffery after he fell asleep at the wheel. Glen Widdowson suffered from severe sleep apnea - which he did not disclose to the DVLA.
CCTV showed her running - in accordance with the Highway Code - and the defendant travelling in the same direction. The positioning of Widdowson's BMW was central, between the near side and off side carriageway. The BMW mounted the kerb on the off side and drove along for 23 metres at 50mph. He woke to find charity worker Aimi, aged 46, on the bonnet. She was projected forward and landed on the carriageway.
Widdowson, 48, of Addington Court, Radcliffe-on-Trent, pleaded guilty to causing her death by dangerous driving. He was banned from driving for four years and nine months.Aimi's husband said she was killed in an accident and "our world caved in". He said she was a marketeer - a born networker - and a fundraiser for central Women's Aid.
Miss Leonard told the packed courtroom that it was accepted that he fell asleep and was, therefore, deprived of sleep and rest. Widdowson, who had no previous convictions and was described as "profoundly sorry", bowed his head during the hearing this afternoon.
