Advice from Annie Lane.
Dear Annie: We lost our granddaughter to drugs and we feel guilty we didn’t do more to help herOur granddaughter had been on drugs for several years. She had been in and out of jail and rehabs. She had two children, ages 1 and 2. She basically abandoned them, so we all decided tough love and prayer were the answer.
You and your family are not the first to hope a tough love approach would be the answer, but addiction is a cruel beast, and your granddaughter was so much more than hers. I often make the same suggestions you did, but what I’m finding is that so many of these people don’t have friends or family to lean on. Dementia tends to isolate both the person who has it and the caregiver. It can occur slowly over the years as friends and family drift away, or sometimes they were never there to begin with. Online support groups can be beyond the capability of many seniors, especially when motivation is lacking or there’s no one to show them how to do it.
