Darth Maul almost stopped Darth Vader from being created twice in the Star Wars timeline, something that would have changed Palpatine’s ultimate plan.
While this would not necessarily have been a better Star Wars timeline, Darth Maul almost prevented Darth Vader from being created twice. Introduced in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Maul could have been Star Wars’ new Darth Vader going by how impactful his first appearance was. However, with Episode I killing off Maul right away, it was up to The Clone Wars to better develop the villain and make him more than Palpatine’s pawn.
In fact, Darth Sidious himself likely did not know that Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi had run into one of the most powerful Force-sensitive beings the galaxy had ever seen on Tatooine. Palpatine’s main goal at that time was to make the Naboo crisis worse, which would help him become Chancellor and set off the events that would lead to the Clone Wars ten years later.
