Dallas needs a well-trained workforce to fuel its economic future | Opinion
Our city’s business and civic leaders must invest more aggressively in training and upskilling professionals or risk leaving behind individuals, especially those in some of its most at-risk ZIP codes. Learning new skills and competencies are not “nice-to-haves” for Dallas if we are to compete in a worldwide marketplace for talent.
The correlation — and the solution — are clear. We must take swift action to cultivate accessible pathways to living-wage jobs for every adult in our community, especially women and Black and Latino young adults, as well as those in industries heavily contributing to our economy, such as health care, technology, construction and hospitality. In these sectors and many other industries, workforce development needs are obvious to all stakeholders.
However, this is only a starting point, and more business leaders must take a hands-on approach to help close the gap and strengthen the city’s workforce. Partner with educational institutions to develop training programs that align with industry needs. Advocate for policies that support workforce development with a focus on underserved communities. Support the existing, successful training initiatives at Dallas College and our independent school districts.
