Hands flew up in front of faces as horrified viewers watched controversial director David Cronenberg’s gruesome spectacle starring Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Stewart.
At Thursday night’s New York premiere of “Crimes of the Future,” controversial director David Cronenberg issued an ominous warning: “Maybe we’ll see you at the end.” “Maybe” is right. His latest shocking movie begins with a mother suffocating her eight-year-old son using a pillow, and that turned out to be one of the evening’s lighter scenes.
Borrowing a page from the singing strippers of “Gypsy” — “You gotta get a gimmick!” — the main characters, Saul and Caprice , have enterprisingly turned the inconvenient growths into performance art. Caprice will surgically excise a shapely mass from Saul’s person as a live audience snaps photos. They’re hotter than the MCU.Nikos Nikolopoulos/Serendipity Point Films
At “Crimes,” you gag a lot more than you giggle. Saul and Caprice lay naked and entwined on an operating table covered in bloody cuts with a “was it good for you?” facial expression. Saul, who’s a medical mess, tries to force slop down his throat with the help of a chair that puts his spine and esophagus in proper alignment. Mortensen always swallows as he speaks, as if always about to vomit.
