A Chinese medicine practitioner from Corby has admitted to being involved in the illegal trade in endangered wildlife for medical purposes. When Northamptonshire Police searched Lei Zheng's home and workplace in the town they found pangolin scales and musk products.
Rural Crime Team officers from Northants Police and the National Wildlife Crime Unit launched a joint investigation in July 2018, after Zheng was found to be selling illegal musk products on the internet. Musk is an aromatic substance used in medicine and perfumes collected from the glands of animals like musk deer and some plants.
Among the products recovered was distinctive scales from the Pangolin. The armadillo-like animal is widely described as one of the most trafficked animals in the world and is now recognised as a globally endangered species.
