It once saw a brawl in 1867 involving sickles

A Northampton pub was once famed for prostitution and saw a criminal transported to Australia for attempted murder. The Mitre Inn, along with Criterion and Cross Keys, were the centre of the town's prostitution in the 1960s.

However, The Criterion pub, now known as The Boston on College Street, survived as a "prostitute pub" until as late as the 1980s. The Mitre Inn was first mentioned in 1752, probably opening sometime in the early 18th century according to Knibb. He writes in the book: "It stood, at the time, In Kings Head Lane. It became a fairly important inn in the town, perfectly positioned for market days but it always had an uphill struggle for status.

There was another serious case in 1851 when the pub was run by the wonderfully named Mrs Undecime Mabbutt. Her daughter, Mary, had for some years been seeing a George Fawkes and there was talk of marriage.
