The final tally of ballots cast in California congressional races shows that Republican candidates had their best primary performance since 2014.

County elections officials reported final results to the California Secretary of State's office on July 8 , and the final tally of ballots cast in congressional races shows that Republican candidates had their best primary performance since 2014.. Final results support that hypothesis: There was a 7.7 percentage point swing to the GOP in the 2022 primary election when compared with the 2020 primary election.
Turnout was lower in the 2022 primary than it was in the 2020 primary, which is understandable as the 2020 congressional primaries coincided with the 2020 Democratic presidential primary election. Without a presidential primary to juice turnout, lower participation among Democratic voters should not be seen as surprising. Interestingly, GOP turnout was still lower than it was in 2020 even though former President Donald Trump did not face a serious primary challenger two years ago.
The primary results do not necessarily portend doom for California Democratic congressional candidates in November. Of the districts , there were more Republican votes cast than Democratic votes in only one district that Cook classifies as held by Democrats: the open 13th District.
