“I take them at their word. Bexar County is their home for the long haul,” said Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai. “I believe today’s action is about trust, and I trust the San Antonio Spurs.”
In contrast to the team's initial request nearly a year ago for permission to host games outside the county-owned AT&T Center, the Bexar County Commissioners Court approved the out-of-market games without reservations Tuesday.
Sakai, who took office Jan. 1, replacing longtime County Judge Nelson Wolff, asked the Spurs to include the Rio Grande Valley in its branding and fan base-building efforts, even if the team is hard-pressed to find a venue that meets NBA league standards. Born in McAllen with family roots in the Valley, Sakai said he's heard the Houston Rockets think they"own" South Texas as a staunch fan base.
