Four games is not indicative of much in a six-month season. It is dangerous to draw any grand conclusions based on such a small sample size. But here are some takeaways from the Astros series win over the Angels.

Houston Astros relief pitcher Ryan Pressly celebrates with catcher Martin Maldonado after the Astros defeat the Los Angeles Angels in a baseball game in Anaheim, Calif., Sunday, April 10, 2022. ANAHEIM, Calif. — On paper, the Astros’ path to another American League West title seems more treacherous. Seattle added reigning American League Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and a slew of talented players this winter.

Exactly what team Maddon was describing is unclear. Houston manager Dusty Baker rested his everyday players regularly this weekend, enraging the fanbase but erring on the side of caution. Jose Altuve and Michael Brantley did not play on Sunday. Alex Bregman did not start Saturday. Yuli Gurriel missed the final three games while on paternity leave. The Astros still managed to muzzle the Angels in spite of it.

Two statistics told this weekend’s story: Houston hit eight home runs and the Angels struck three. Take out the eight-run outburst in Friday’s eighth inning and the Astros have just a 12-10 edge over the Angels. Both teams pitched well and saw their best bats struggle. Baker’s words on Sunday about April batting trends seemed prescient.

If polish or poise can be palpable, Peña exuded it this week. None of these four games seemed to overwhelm him — not that anyone assumed it would. He played with no apparent hesitation and seemed at ease from, literally, pitch one on Thursday, when Ohtani hit him a tough ground ball and Peña made a beautiful charging play.“He plays older than his age and older than his experience,” Baker said after Sunday’s game. “This is how you like young players to play. He’s not in awe of anything.
