Houston is paying Pedro Báez $5.5 million this season.

His inclusion on the opening day roster arrived as no surprise, though given his spring training showing it should have been.
Houston is paying Báez $5.5 million this season. The team painted him as a prized bullpen acquisition last winter, so discarding him before opening day never felt realistic. Perhaps nothing better illustrates the team’s belief in him than Friday night, when Báez made his season debut during the eighth inning of a game his team led by 10.
Báez faced six batters. Four reached. He collected two outs and yielded three runs before manager Dusty Baker mercifully ended the outing. Báez threw 10 four-seam fastballs that averaged 88.8 mph. His fastball sat at 95.8 mph in 2019 and 94.4 mph in 2020. Báez suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him for most of the 2021 season, but both Baker and general manager James Click have insisted the reliever is healthy.
An error by backup second baseman Niko Goodrum on Friday did not help Báez’s cause, but the veteran reliever had myriad other issues. He threw 27 pitches that generated two swings and misses. He averaged 82.5 mph on his changeup — 4.3 mph slower than his average in 2020.
