“I accept full responsibility for it and I can assure you it won’t happen again.”
In a one-run loss, situations like this seem magnified. Peña’s perplexing decision cannot be blamed by itself. The team stranded 11 baserunners and went 3-for-15 with runners on base. Houston’s malaise did warrant some drastic action during that fourth inning. Manager Dusty Baker wished it would have been from Peña’s power.
Peña struck a long three-run home run during Friday’s game. His .763 OPS represents the only form of life at the bottom of Houston’s batting order. Backup catcher Jason Castro and center fielder Jose Siri hit behind him on Saturday. They entered the game a combined 9-for-57 with 25 strikeouts. Asked if Peña bunted on his own or if the dugout called for it, Baker replied “we have to get better.”
“I said last week we’re still missing some signs,” Baker said. “We’ll get better. We’ll address it. He was the hottest hitter at the bottom of the order. He didn’t bunt on his own. He thought he saw something which wasn’t. We’ll address it.” The situation did not at all scream bunt, especially with a lineup still missing Jose Altuve and Michael Brantley. Yordan Alvarez started the frame with a long solo home run to dead center field. Yuli Gurriel worked a walk and Kyle Tucker struck a single in the next two plate appearances, putting Peña in the batter’s box.
