One vowed 'never to return'
It takes barely ten minutes to drive from the centre of one to the other. If you're getting the train it takes six.On an unusually sunny August morning, one told LancsLive Colne, in Pendle, had been undergoing something of a resurgence - thanks to its shops, attractions, and "fabulous" parks. The centre of Nelson, on the other hand, they described as a "no-go area".
Further plans last year announced the town would benefit from £25m in targeted support from the government, as part of the Nelson Town Deal. This amongst other things, will aim to transform under-used and long-term vacant buildings and sites and bring them back into use for residential and commercial purposes.Diane Whitaker has lived in the area for 70 years and currently resides at the top end of Colne.
"My dad had a butchers shop in the arcade and I used to live down Salisbury Street and the old market was there. It's all being taken over now and it's all going to be stalls and it's going to be posh - we're going to be on par with Skipton."Another resident shopping in Colne has lived in Nelson for over 50 years, but told LancsLive she has vowed never to return. Now living in Barrowford, she says her old hometown isn't the same as it once was.
She added: "There was clothing shops, jewellery shops and chemists that sold perfumes, it had everything. It used to have the stock car racing and there was a really good nightlife, but now it's just gone." "There's a lot more independent shops in Colne, I think they're managed to stay on the high street and that's something food, especially after Covid. The difference between Nelson and Colne is that there's quite a lot of older architecture as well, you can really see it on the high street so it makes a difference, as you feel like you want to come up the high street and then stay around a bit to shop.
"I think it's what you're familiar with really, you can't really judge can you? I'm familiar with Colne, people who live in Nelson will be familiar with Nelson and they probably know what to get. It also aims to support sustainable jobs and improve productivity in the manufacturing sector, improve the five-year arts and culture programme and introduce an Advanced Digital Skills Hub and Academy.Unlike Colne, it wasn't thriving with visitors, window shoppers and day-trippers. "It's been more quiet since they did a lot of changes around here, there's a lot of takeaways, but there's not much parking," Azmat said. "In the community, when people are shopping, they only get one hour. Contrasting this is Zahida Shamim who works for a private advertising company. Nelson born and bred, Zahida works in the community and refutes the idea that there's little to do, or no events in the town. On Saturday, May 6, she helped put together a celebration for King Charles III's Coronation.
