Aug. 01, 2022, 7:29 a.m.A scholarship program that has for nearly a decade funded private school tuition for students from low-income homes shows nine out of 10 of those students attend religious schools, even though fewer students overall are using the program.
Instead of paying state income tax, Alabama residents can donate money to nonprofit organizations, which then turn that money into scholarships for eligible students to attend the participating school of their choice, public or private, religious or not. While the program began operating in 2013, information on where scholarship recipients attended school first became available during the 2015-16 school year.
