fruit, even a short row of raspberries gives useful pickings. “Glen Ample” is a good summer option, but autumn-fruiting variants such as “Polka” need no netting against birds. Blueberries cost more, but can also crop prolifically with little bell-shaped spring flowers and, later, autumn colour. Easily pot-grown, plant two for cross-pollination – “Brigitta” and “Chandler”, say – to encourage greater yields.
Although arguably they lack presence for beds and borders, they look superb massed in hanging baskets. Good ones include pink-yellow flowers perfumed “Wisley Vanilla”, “Raspberries and Cream” and purple-blue “Myrtille”.Though actually short-lived perennials in most cases, classic cottage garden plants are usually found in one-litre pots. A good buy, they can be expected to flower in summer. Aquilegia , foxgloves, hollyhocks and lupins are popular and widely offered by garden centres.
