TOTK’s Hudson originated in far older Zelda games.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Hudson’s distinctive haircut makes him instantly recognizable in both The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild, but the latest games in the Zelda series aren’t the first to feature his design. The Legend of Zelda series is no stranger to reusing NPCs, to the point that many of Hyrule’s most well-known faces appear to be reincarnated, similar to Link.

A carpenter by trade, Hudson is introduced as an employee of Bolson Construction in BOTW. Much of his story is tied to the founding of Tarrey Town, which Link plays a crucial part in building through the gathering of supplies and recruiting prospective residents. By the end of BOTW’s "From The Ground Up" side quest, Hudson has married the Gerudo, Rhondson, and they have subsequently had a daughter named Mattison in TOTK.

Hudson Is Based On One Of Ocarina Of Time’s Carpenters Among the cast of the iconic Ocarina of Time is a group of brown-haired, mustachioed carpenters who wear unbuttoned blue jackets, baring their chests as a result. Of course, it is extremely clear that these characters are predecessors to Hudson, both in terms of occupation and appearance.

The Carpenters Are Recurring Characters In The Legend Of Zelda Notably, the carpenters are found imprisoned in the Gerudo’s Fortress after OoT’s seven-year time skip, having made an ill-advised attempt to join the bandits. It seems that this incident is referenced in Hudson’s marriage to Rhondson. It should also be noted that this is not the group’s only appearance; their designs are reused in Majora’s Mask, with this new group building Clock Town’s tower for the Festival of Time.

The incarnation of Hyrule introduced in Breath of the Wild includes many references to past Zelda titles, and the character of Hudson is one of the more subtle and complex examples of this. The taciturn carpenter clearly has his roots in Ocarina of Time and is a successor to that game’s woodworkers in spirit, if not in name. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Hudson is happily married to a Gerudo woman and has his own construction company working all across Hyrule.
