A youth baseball coach and his team have been banned after he pushed an umpire Saturday during a game in The Colony, sending the umpire to the hospital.
Detectives are reviewing the incident and could issue an arrest warrant in coming days, said Officer Rick De La Cruz, spokesman for The Colony police.“If there are no consequences, this can continue,” Phelps told Channel 4. “I don’t want to destroy anyone’s life. But I would like this to be a learning opportunity to get this out there.”
Phelps is recovering at home, said L’Erin Hampton, founder and president of 24 Sports, which hosted the tournament at The Colony Five Star Complex. The incident started when the coach disagreed with a safe call at home plate during the game for 9- and 10-year-olds, Hampton said. Shouting, the coach got in the umpire’s face.
Phelps gave him a warning, then ejected him from the game when the coach refused to back down, Hampton said. The coach then reportedly shoved Phelps in the face, causing him to fall backward and hit his head. Phelps was dazed and unable to stand up for a few minutes, Hampton said, and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and released that evening.
