A reader takes issue with Sen. John Cornyn’s line questioning of Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.I am not surprised by the performance-art behavior of our two Texas senators during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, especially the one who projects himself as a strict constitutionalist.
However, particularly galling was Sen. John Cornyn’s misleading statements of what a “fundamental right” is. As Jackson answered, “When there is a right, it means that there are limitations, on regulation, even if people are regulating pursuant to their sincerely held religious beliefs.” This applies to civil rights, women’s rights, including science-based abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, immigrants’ rights, etc.
Shadow dockets should be routinely identified and eliminated from the courts, as they are more often than not religious-based.
